Carlsbad, CA (October 21, 2010) – With Halloween approaching, CareerCast.com (www.CareerCast.com), a national job portal, revealed today the 10 scariest, creepiest and just plain most disturbing jobs of 2010. Forensic Entomologist, Miner, and Broadcast Tower Technician topped the list, which was determined by utilizing phobia rankings based on data from the Merck Medical Library, as well as from the Library of the Surgeon General.
“It’s no surprise that Forensic Entomologist came out on top,” says Tony Lee, publisher, CareerCast.com. “Forensic Entomologists carve up cadavers in search of crime scene clues, but with a unique twist – their specialty is not the bodies themselves, but the insects living inside the bodies. Forensic Entomologists can determine the time or place a crime occurred based on the type of beetles, flies or maggots living inside the victim.”
As anyone who has been around a dead body or fainted at the sight of blood can attest, it’s not easy to spend a work day carving up cadavers without being creeped out. Phobias include Necrophobia (fear of dead bodies), Entomophobia (fear of insects) and Hemophobia (fear of blood). Toss maggots gestating inside a person’s organs into the mix, and you’ve got a recipe for the scariest job of 2010.
“The film ‘Silence of the Lambs’ provided a good view of what that job is like,” says Lee. “It’s definitely not a job for the faint of heart, but if you have a strong stomach and don’t get upset easily, it can be a very lucrative career – and, since it’s so specialized, you probably won’t have a lot of competition.”
CareerCast.com’s second scariest job for 2010 is Miner. The recent rescue of 33 Chilean miners who were trapped underground for 69 days highlights why mining can be frightening. Claustrophobia is one of the most common phobias, and add to that Achluophobia (fear of darkness) and Mysophobia (fear of germs or dirt), and it’s clear that laboring as a miner can be a scary experience.
For number three, forget about washing windows on a skyscraper. The job of Broadcast Tower Technician is far scarier. The tallest broadcast tower is the KVLY-TV mast in North Dakota at a whopping 2,063 feet high. And whenever routine maintenance needs to be performed on this massive structure, a Broadcast Tower Technician goes all the way to the very top, often free-climbing the last leg. The main phobias associated with this job are Acrophobia (fear of heights) and Astraphobia (fear of thunder and lightning).
